Sec 11 college gets president from fledgling union
Three times gold medalist in athletics, College-Colour holder and a topper in academics, Sombir, a final-year BA student is a new entrant into politics.

A group of students at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, who were initially a part of Indian Students’ Association (ISA), had formed a separate union, Shaheed Bhagat Students’ Union (SBSU), few months ago.
They had decided to contest the election for the first time this year to approach more number of students through their work and surprisingly won the seat of president.
Sombir Grewal, whom the students knew as an ‘All-rounder’ as he excels in sports, curriculars and academics, has become the president of the students council of PGGC-11.
Three times gold medalist in athletics, College-Colour holder and a topper in academics, Sombir, a final-year BA student is a new entrant into politics.
Since the SBSU had no affiliation with any other organisation on the campus, it claims to have spent only Rs 1,200 on the election, unlike other parties that had spent thousands during the campaigning.
Vijay Kumar, a member of the national council of SBSU, said, “Everybody is aware about our five-day hunger strike recently on the college campus. We have been fighting for the welfare of students. One thing that has appealed to the students to vote for us is our non-affiliation with any political party on the campus. Secondly, our students organisation will never work like a dominating party. We will work with the students who have voted for us.”
Sharing the party agendas, Sombir said, “We feel proud to know that our college is a A grade college in the city, but it is depressing to see that our college does not offer any of the A grade facilities.”
He added, “There are a lot of things on our agenda, which we have been working for the past three months. The ones that will be on priority will be security at the girls hostel, increase in the number of seats in BA course, promotion of Punjabi and Hindi medium and clean washrooms.”
Sombir also shared that the college does not have any drinking water supply after 10am.
“Every year, this issue is raised, but the authorities do not bother to pay heed to it. Also, the students do not get a break to have their lunch throughout the day, which is why some of them bunk their classes. To have a half-an-hour lunch break during the college time is also on our agenda,” he added.
POLL FEVER
SOI, NSUI Facebook updates
Soon after the Students Organisation of India (SOI) announced the winner of the students council election, its Facebook page was flooded with hundreds of photographs of the winning office bearers and a series of photographs depicting the journey of SOI leaders in the past one year. On the other hand, there was no update on the NSUI page that was more active than SOI, throughout the day.
‘Victory’ lap
Assuring victory in city colleges, the senior leaders of Students Organisation of India (SOI) from the Panjab University campus including Rashpal Hakkuwala, were seen taking rounds of the colleges and guiding college representatives during the voting process.
Peaceful polls
This year, the environment in PU on the day of the election was relatively calm, with not much activity recorded on campus until the declaration of the results. The UT Police and the PU authorities appreciated the way in which the elections were held this year.
Advantage SOI
During the time of counting at the Gymnasium Hall, members of NSUI, PUSU and ABVP were hardly seen with the verdict of the students favouring the SOI panel being clear right from the beginning.
A referendum
Along with the voting for office-bearers and department representatives, students of Panjab University also voted on a referendum to decide whether to make the academic area of the university a four-wheeler free space or not. Results of the referendum will be analysed by the authorities this week, and a decision will be taken accordingly.
And an accident
While taking out the victory processions after the results were declared, one of the cars incidentally had rammed into another car in front of the Petrol Pump, Sector 10, causing damage to both the cars. The cars had bore stickers of SOI.
