School students most affected by swine flu virus

The H1N1 virus has infected 32 persons so far in the city, with nearly half in the age bracket of 10 to 20 years.

As per the UT Health department,10 schoolchildren in age group of 10 to 15 years, five of 16 to 19 years, have tested positive. Seven cases are reported in the age group of 30-40 years, eight in age group of 20 to 29 years and only 2 between 45 to 50 years. None above 50 years has been tested swine flu positive, though a few senior citizens had undergone the test to test their status.

Eighteen positive cases are from Chandigarh and seven from Punjab and Haryana each. “The first nine cases tested positive in the city had a common link—a foreign travel history. But after that people without any such history also tested positive, and now even schoolchildren are affected,” said a health official.

Experts believe the exposure to the carriers of the virus followed by the lack of immunity form the basis of the H1N1.

“Exposure to the virus is a paramount factor for the progression of the infection. Hence the working class and active people, who are on the move, meeting people,or schoolchildren who mingle with others at the public places are the most affected lot,” a doctor said.
