Say a Li’l Prayer

Comebacks are something to look out for. You either wrap yourself in a saree and make a ‘motherly’ appearance or you take dance lessons and take the centrestage on a shake-a-leg reality show. You can also try and lock yourself with a dozen other losers in a big brother’s house. Then there are some who finds ways to return every other month, like going in for a big fat Indian swayamwar. In all these cases,it’s the highway. In Monica Bedi’s case,it’s a higher-way,the spiritual street where she’s chanting the Lord’s name and celebrating thanksgiving. Don’t get us wrong,we are not making fun of it. But instead lauding the foolproof comeback, although the lady in question refuses to admit this as her shot at re-acceptance. “I’ve been through life’s biggest, most difficult trial, and it was only in God that I found the strength to carry on. He is the only one truth of life, someone who is there for you unconditionally,” she speaks softly,as soft as the colour pink of her suit. In town to release her cassette,Ek Onkaar,Monica says she’s ‘meditating the truth’,and it was Universal Music Group that approached her to sing. “Pray,” she corrects us. “I’m not a singer. Through this album I’m praying for faith can move mountains,” says the bhakt who submitted herself to His will and emerged successful.

“We wanted to enter the Punjab market with a dhamaka, starting with Punjabi MC and then Bohemia. While we have Gurdas Mann and Hans Raj Hans with us too,we were looking for someone who would do justice to the Gurbani section, and someone suggested Monica’s name,so we went for it,” Rajeeta Hemwani,VP,A&R,Universal Music gives her reason for ‘opting for a completely different person and voice for this spiritual album’. “We’ve followed Gurbani exactly, and taken guidance from Raagis,” adds Monica. After Bigg Boss and Jhalak, the girl’s grabbed a spot in yet another reality show. “And I cannot reveal anything about it,” she keeps her lips sealed. There’s a film too which begins in September, but that’s about it. Guess someone’s taking it slow and steady!
