Sanitation workers’ strike worsens garbage woes in Mohali
“A three-member team has assured they will return on July 3 to settle the matter, but by then the situation will have worsened significantly. Immediate action is necessary,” the Mayor said.

The ongoing strike by sanitation workers and door-to-door waste collectors in Municipal Corporation (MC), Mohali has plunged the city into a severe cleanliness crisis. With garbage piling up in several areas, streets and dumping sites are reeking of rotting waste, causing distress to residents and raising serious public health concerns.
In light of the deteriorating conditions, efforts are being made by political leaders and municipal officials to find a resolution to the crisis.
Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu has appealed to MLA Kulwant Singh to personally intervene and help end the strike. Speaking to reporters, the mayor stated, “though this issue lies between the municipal commissioner and sanitation workers, the MLA must step in to resolve it for the public good”. He added that the ADC, ASP, and DSP had visited the affected areas, but the Municipal Commissioner has been absent from the office for the past two days.
“A three-member team has assured they will return on July 3 to settle the matter, but by then the situation will have worsened significantly. Immediate action is necessary,” the Mayor said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, urging him to bring the strike to an end and to provide the MC with a designated dumping site. He pointed out that the GMADA, headed by the Chief Secretary himself, must take responsibility for allocating proper land for waste disposal.
“The people of Mohali are in distress. If the government doesn’t act swiftly, public protests could erupt, and the Punjab government will be held accountable,” Bedi warned.
Responding to the situation, MLA Kulwant Singh criticised the mayor, claiming he is “only making statements in the media”. He assured the public that the matter has his attention and that a solution will be reached soon.
