Samrala: Man who attacked wife, son with axe arrested

Police said that Harjit Singh alias Jeeta was arrested from Anandpur Sahib. Police also rescued his 14-year-old son Manjot Singh whom he had taken along with after the incident.

Three days after a man had allegedly opened an attack on his wife and 17-year old son with an axe, leaving both seriously injured, at Kotla village of Samrala on April 6 and fled from the spot with his other 14-year old son, the Khanna Police Saturday arrested him.

Police said that Harjit Singh alias Jeeta was arrested from Anandpur Sahib. Police also rescued his 14-year-old son Manjot Singh whom he had taken along with after the incident.

On Thursday, Harjit had attacked his wife and elder son with an axe, hitting them multiple times and leaving them seriously injured. He had allegedly dumped injured mother-son in nearby fields and fled. Harjit worked as a carpenter. Both injured were referred to PGIMER Chandigarh.

DSP (Samrala) Waryam Singh said that the accused suspected that his wife had developed illicit relations with her own son following which he tried to kill both of them.

The accused told police he suspected his wife Jaswinder Kaur, 38, of having an affair with their son Lovepreet Singh, 17. The police are waiting for his 14-year-old son to record his statement. The younger son is still in shock, said police.

DSP Waryam Singh said police arrested the accused from Anandpur Sahib. The police also recovered the sharp edged weapon used in the crime.

“During questioning, the accused said that he was keeping an eye on his wife and elder son for the five days. On Thursday morning he assaulted both of them with an intention to kill them, however they survived,” said the DSP.
Both injured persons have undergone multiple surgeries.

Further the accused told police that he was not a drug addict.

An FIR under sections 307 and 34 of IPC was lodged against the accused at Samrala police station.
