SAD calls Majithia case political vendetta, says charges rejected by Supreme Court
Says no inquiry was held before registering disproportionate assets FIR; questions drug money allegations
In his petition, Majithia has alleged that the FIR is a product of “political witch-hunting and vendetta” aimed at maligning him .
(File Photo)The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of misusing state machinery to target senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia by registering a disproportionate assets case against him without any preliminary or regular inquiry.
At a press conference in Amritsar, senior SAD leaders Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, and Daljit Singh Cheema alleged that the case was politically motivated and aimed at silencing Majithia, while also distracting public attention from what they called the state’s failed anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nashean Virudh.
Maheshinder Singh Grewal said, “The government is misleading the people by alleging Majithia was arrested in a Rs 540 crore drug case. This is a bundle of lies. The government has not presented a single complaint to justify the figure mentioned.”
Drawing a comparison with the Delhi liquor policy case, Grewal pointed out that there were specific complaints from liquor contractors against AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia. In contrast, he said, there was no evidence against Majithia in the NDPS case, in which he is already on bail. “The High Court found no recovery, no drug money, and no related transactions,” he said.
Grewal also dismissed the disproportionate assets allegations as baseless. “The properties listed in the complaint existed in the Majithia family even before Mr Majithia was born. The family has a long history of land ownership,” he said. He added that Majithia had resigned as a director of Saraya Industries in 2007 and was no longer involved in its decisions.
Daljit Singh Cheema said all the current allegations had already been placed before the Supreme Court during a plea seeking cancellation of Majithia’s bail in the NDPS case, and the court had not taken cognizance. He also alleged that during Majithia’s court appearance in Mohali, a curfew-like situation was created, causing hardship to other litigants.
Veteran SAD leader Balwinder Singh Bhundar compared the government’s actions to the Emergency era. “This is a case of political revenge,” he said, claiming the AAP government had formed multiple SITs and suspended officers over the past three years to pursue Majithia. Bhundar also thanked opposition parties for what he called their support and solidarity.
