Against the backdrop of yellow and green fields,four skinny lads break into a flirtatious dance with a girl,who in turn,shakes a leg,showing off her curves in a fitted pair of jeans and a T-shirt,complete with a pair of sunglasses. These are Haryanvi pop stars featuring in a song called La ke chasme pahar ke kurti,which has gone viral on the web. Other songs such as Marjani,Facebook te chatting te setting,Angrejan,Bolan ka ke legi,Chhori billo and Ram dulari also play one after the other on sites such as Haryanamusic.com and Jaatmusic.com. Earlier this year,Prem Singh Dehati moved audiences with a rendition of Haryanvi song Badal uthiya in Hindi film Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. Climbing up the independent charts are the tracks Gaddi and Current by singer SB Haryanvi. Rustic numbers roll on YouTube,flaunting a new face of Haryanvi music. The Jaats are crooning country music and cashing in on the growing popularity of the regions folksy tunes. The 9X Tashan channel is eyeing Haryana as a potential market. With more and more television channels coming up,interiors of India are the new territories to exploit. Not only do people connect with their music,it gives a boost to the local talent and creates a whole new level of demand and supply, says Punit Pandey,EVP,New Business,9X Media Group. The channel has introduced two new animated characters Jatt and Jaat. Best buddies,Jatt is from Bathinda and Jaat from Rohtak,and both are desi boys who love their mother tongue and narrate humorous incidents to each other about their respective villages. Haryanvi says,I want to change the perception about our music. He adds how 10 years ago,even Punjabi music and films were written off. Quality aside,he feels that a change in the mindset is a must. Right now,even decent Haryanvi songs are sold as hot and sexy numbers,giving a totally wrong impression of our music and culture, says Haryanvi,who is trying to make his music sound softer and appealing,and has come up with a romantic ballad,Chahat,and a quirky fun track,Desi jaat. He plans to take out an album by the end of this year. Meanwhile,JMD Music,on Thursday,unveiled its first album Sadkan. Apart from four Punjabi songs by Karan Gill (Sadkan,Giddha,Raat and Bugchu),the albums highlight are three Haryanvi songs Andy chhori,Bholey and Pyaar sung by city-based rapper Nawaab Saab. The music has been composed by newcomers Nitin Gorkhi and Ambala-based SNI Nagra. A VJ who won Sonys show Entertainment Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega and rapped for Bollywood song Anarkali Disco Chali (Houseful 2),Saab belongs to Rohtak. Punjabi music has seen a huge boom,something that Haryana missed out on. But its the digital age,and its time to revive our music, says Saab. As one runs through the names of legendary singers from the state Pandit Lakhami Chand,Rajkishan Agwanpuria,Rajender Kharkiya,Birpal Kharkiya,Master Satbir,Gajender Phogat and Subhash Fauji Mumbai-based Sanchit Balhara rewinds to the days of his father,Bhal Singh Balhara,dubbed as Haryanvi singing star. Last year,Balhara senior wrote and directed his first Haryanvi movie,Tera Mera Vaada,the music of which was given by his sons,Sanchit and Ankit. The songs,Hum Haryane waale kuchh bhi kar dein,Vaada kar de saajan mere and Aaja mere tubewell pa,and item number Chandigarh mein bagdo,did extremely well in Haryanas hinterland because people want to hear their language, says Sanchit,who is now working on another Haryanvi folk album. The youth is connecting fast on social networking sites,and I see our music play more and more in the coming days, says Sanchit.
