The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi today sentenced 21-year-old Gaurav Kumar to four years’ rigorous imprisonment.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi today sentenced 21-year-old Gaurav Kumar to four years’ rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 7,500 on the accused. Gaurav was convicted by the court under Section 308 of the IPC (attempt to culpable homicide) on Thursday.

The final-year student of BA was accused of injuring a police home guard volunteer,Satnam Singh,in April 2008. “It is a clear case of road rage as the convict did not stop the car even when the policeman was hanging onto his life atop the bonnet. Road rage is a menace, created by the rich and powerful people of the society to hoodwink the law. They drive with a confidence that nobody will check them. This should be dealt with an iron hand,” read the court order.

“The convict committed the crime, fully knowing the repercussions of his act. All this was done by him to save a minor penalty for driving without a licence and talking on the phone while driving. He was conscious of his act. He not only tried to run away from the law enforcing agency but also tried to kill an innocent person who was performing his duties as a public servant,” said the judge while pronouncing the order.

The victim was lucky that he did not fall on the road or he could have been killed. The accused had the intention of running away with a belief that he cannot be apprehended as he belonged to a far-off place in Punjab, read the order.

The accused had pleaded court to take a lenient view as he is a student and his career is at stake.

“No leniency can be shown in such cases, keeping in view the gravity of the crime. The accused is not entitled to any benefit of probation even though he is a first-time offender,” the court order added.

He got nervous,says family

The father and brother of the accused, who were present in the court today, repeatedly requested the media not to publish any photograph or news of the conviction. A resident of Muktsar,Gaurav is the youngest of three brothers and a sister. A family friend, who was also present in the court said,“He got nervous on seeing the policeman.” Gaurav was a fresher at SD College at the time of the incident. He is now pursuing his studies at Muktsar,he added.
