A clash took place between the police and members of a faction of Ravidasia community in Dhilwan village on Sunday when the latter was trying to install the bust of a man killed in last years violence in Jalandhar after the assassination of Sant Ramanand of Dera Ballan in Vienna. As the police tried to stop them, the protesters resorted to heavy stone-pelting on the men in khaki, following which the police fired shots in the air and later cane-charged the community members. Four policemen were injured, two of them seriously. They are ASI Kuldip Singh and Head Constable Harjinder Singh. According to reports,a section of Ravidasia community in Dhilwan village wanted to install the bust of Vijay Kumar in a community hall, the land for which had been provided by the gram panchayat. Another section opposed this on the ground that the community hall was a common place. This section had complained to the police and also moved court, which had granted a stay on the installation. On Sunday, the section favouring the installation first held a rally under the banner of Shri Guru Ravidas Dharam Yudh Morcha and raised slogans against the Punjab government and the police for their failure to arrest Vijays killers. When they tried to go ahead with the installation, the other group tried to stop them and the police were called. DCP (City-II) Sarabjit Singh said the protesters indulged in heavy stone-pelting because of which additional reinforcement had to be requisitioned. Nearly 15 people have been arrested and booked for damaging public property.
