Rajwinder puts patiala in charge against chandigarh

The left-arm spinner picks up seven wickets to skittle out Chandigarh for 118,Patiala finish 143/2 at stumps

The formidable Chandigarh team was put on the mat by arch-rivals Patiala on the first day of the Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament match being played for Katoch Sheild,as they were bowled out for 118 runs in their first innings at DMW Cricket Ground,Patiala. Patiala left-arm spinner Rajwinder Singh wove a web around the Chandigarh batsmen to scalp seven wickets. After winning the toss,Patiala bowlers kept Chandigarh batsmen on a tight leash and bowled them out for a paltry total in 46.4 overs. Apart from Manan Vohra (35) and skipper Vishwas Bhalla (21),no other Chandigarh batsman could contribute with the bat. Rajwinder bowled exceptionally well and extracted both bounce and turn from the wicket. The Chandigarh batting line-up fell like nine pins and soon they folded up for 118 runs. Rajwinder unsettled the Chandigarh batsmen with his sharp turn and removed Gurkirat Walia,Amit Parashar and Sarul Kanwar who failed to deliver for Chandigarh.

At this stage,Chandigarh were looking down the barrel with six batsmen back to the pavillion with only 81 runs on the board in 26.5 overs. Thereafter,Gaurav Gambhir and Gurinder Singh took the total past the 100-run mark before Sandeep Sharma dismissed last match centurion Gurinder Singh for 19 runs. Rajwinder Singh returned with flattering figures of 17.4-5-36-7 . He was ably supported by medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma who took two wickets for 28 runs.

In reply to Chandigarh’s first innings total,Patiala were 143 for the loss of two wickets in 41 overs at the end of first day’s play. Patiala openers,Kunwar Raina and Ravi Inder Singh,stitched an opening partnership of 106 runs for the first wicket,before Ravi Inder Singh was caught by Amit Parashar of off-spinner Gaurav Gambhir for a well-made 71 off 86 balls. Kunwar Raina was unbeaten on 44 runs along with night-watchman Sandeep Sharma (11 no) in the middle.

Jalandhar in driver’s seat

After winning the toss against Mohali at the F.C.Sondhi Ground in Jalandhar,the hosts opted to bat first and sent Mohali bowlers on a leather hunt. Jalandhar opened with Mandeep Jr. and Bhupinder Jr. who added 47 runs for the first wicket before Bhupinder was trapped in front by Harmeet Bansal for 31 runs. At this stage,skipper Taruwar Kohli walked in to join Mandeep Jr. and the duo got together and slaughtered Mohali bowlers. The duo added 184 runs for the unbroken second-wicket partnership,taking their team’s total to 231 for 1 in 90 overs at close of first day’s play. In the process,Mandeep Jr. went on to complete an unbeaten century (102) while Taruwar Kohli was unbeaten on 86 runs. For Mohali,Harmeet Bansal was the lone successful bowler capturing one wicket for 41 runs.

Batting first against Ludhiana,Amritsar were skittled out for 118 runs in 51 overs during the first innings in a match being played at the PAU grounds. For Ludhiana,Amritpal Singh (5 for 24) and Rahul Singla (3 for 36) were the main wicket takers. This total included a penalty of 16 runs for maintaining slow over rate. For Amritsar,Mohit Handa (24) and Aman Bawa (18) were the main run-getters. In reply,Ludhiana batsmen failed miserably and were bundled out for 97 runs in 25.5 overs with Baltez Singh (22) and Anil Sihag (18) making the main contributions with the bat. For Amritsar,right arm off-spinner,Charanjit Singh (6 for 56) and right-arm medium-pacer Kamal Passi (3 for 11) did most of the damage. Leading by 21 runs on the first innings,Amritsar in their second essay were13 for 2 in 11 overs at close of first day’s play. In total,22 wickets fell on the first day of the match.
