It was a welcome befitting a queen,as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati landed in Nawanshahr on Saturday. There was a race to touch her feet, speakers blared Punjabi songs dedicated to her and Saloh village in Nawanshahr district, where Mayawati addressed a BSP rally on Saturday, was swathed in blue.

The moment Mayawati’s chopper appeared in the sky, hordes of party workers and activists on ground began waving and screaming. Slogans like “Desh Ki Neta kaisi ho Behan Mayawati Jaisi ho”,soon began to ring out. The intense slogan shouting continued for over 10 minutes before Mayawati finally took to the stage. On stage, the UP chief minister sat on a single sofa chair while all the other party leaders sat behind her, with not a single one daring to sit parallel to her. She addressed the audience for about half an hour and was the only speaker at the rally.

The waiting crowd were earlier, treated to songs that praised the BSP supremo. Raj Daddral sang “Jai Bhim Te fateh Bulande,Baba Sahib the mission Chalande,Mehnat kar Ke agge vadde Kadi Na Mangvi Khande,Behan Ji Bhujana Di ban gi UP di Rani” (Mayawati became the queen of UP because of her hard work). Another popular number was “UP Bangra Delhi Te karu Raj Behanji Mayawati Sherni” (Like UP,Mayawati the lioness will rule Delhi).

The applause for the leader, however, refused to cede with people cheering her even after she left the venue.
