Wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat during the wrestlers' protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Monday, May 22, 2023. (PTI/File) Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik on Thursday joined Quami Insaaf Morcha members at the Mohali-Chandigarh border and issued a call to the protesters there to lend their support to a group of wrestlers who have been holding a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against Wrestling Federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Malik on Thursday, after joining the protests, appealed to the organisers to support the wrestlers as they hold a protest march in Delhi on May 28.
Later, Gurcharan Singh, the organiser of the morcha, told The Indian Express that they had decided to support the protesting wrestlers and shall be a part of the May 28 protest in Delhi.
Singh also stated that a meeting of the morcha with 15 farmer unions, and representatives of Sant Samaaj was held on
Thursday, during which it was unanimously decided that Quami Insaaf Morcha shall intensify their protests in the coming days to press for their demands.
“On June 20, we shall hold a symbolic protest of our own in Delhi. On July 15, we shall stage a protest against Chief Ministers (CMs) of Punjab and Delhi at all the district headquarters in the state, and on August 15, we shall hold a march towards Chandigarh to reach the Governor’s house,” he said.
On January 7, agitators under the banner of ‘Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’ had gathered at the historical Amb Sahib Gurdwara in Punjab’s Mohali to demand the release of Sikh prisoners who had completed their jail terms. From there, the protesters had tried marching towards Chandigarh, but were, however, stopped by police at the border on the same day, following which the protesters launched a ‘pakka morcha’ at the spot to press for their demands.
