Punjab to provide subsidy on certified wheat seeds for maximum 5 acres per farmer

Certified varieties of wheat seeds eligible for the subsidy are Unnat PBW 343, Unnat PBW 550, PBW 1 Zinc, PBW 725, PBW 677, HD 3086, WH 1105, PBW 1 Chapati, PBW 766, DBW 303, DBW 187, DBW 222, PBW 803, PBW 824, PBW 826, PBW 869 and PBW 752. (Representational)

With the wheat sowing season around the corner, the Punjab government will distribute around two lakh quintals of certified wheat seeds at subsidised rates among farmers, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian said in a press communique on Saturday.

The minister said the certified wheat seeds would be provided at a 50 per cent subsidy, or to a maximum of Rs 1,000 per quintal, to farmers in the Rabi season. The farmers would pay only the amount left after reduction of the subsidy amount on the purchase of the wheat seeds.

The subsidy for wheat seeds will be provided for a maximum of five acres (2 quintals) per farmer, the minister said, adding that priority would be given to Scheduled Caste, small-scale (2.5-5 acres) and marginal farmers (up to 2.5 acres).

Interested farmers can apply at agrimachinerypb.com till October 31 for the subsidy on wheat seeds.

The minister also directed K A P Sinha, special chief secretary (development), to ensure close monitoring of the quality of seeds being sold in the state. He also said that anybody found involved in malpractice while distributing the seeds would not be spared, in a warning to officers concerned, employees of seed agencies as well as district and block-level agriculture officers.

All government or semi-government seed producing agencies and their authorised dealers will sell subsidised wheat seeds and upload on the online portal the bills with the tag number of bags of sold seeds.
