50.3 degrees Celsius in Sirsa, 47.5 in Pathankot: North India remains in the grip of severe heatwave
Rainfall is likely at isolated places but the heatwave will continue, as per the India Meteorological Department.

At a blazing temperature of 50.3 degrees Celsius, Haryana’s Sirsa district was the hottest place in the region that also comprised Punjab and Chandigarh on Tuesday. While Haryana’s Hisar recorded 49.3 degrees Celsius and Mewat 49 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature in Punjab was recorded in semi-hilly Pathankot district, at 47.5 degrees Celsius.
The automatic weather station of Sirsa recorded 50.3 degrees Celsius while Sirsa city recorded 49.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
Located in the foothills of Shivalik Hills and close to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu, Pathankot normally does not top the list of districts with the highest maximum temperatures. But it was on the top on Tuesday, followed by Bathinda at 47.2 degrees Celsius, Ferozepur at 46.9 degrees Celsius and 46.8 degrees Celsius in Barnala.
According to the India Meteorological Department, rainfall is likely at isolated places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from May 30 to June 2, but there will not be much relief from heat waves as an orange alert has been issued for the region for May 30. This means a heatwave at fewer places and warm nights at isolated places. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert (a heatwave and warm nights at isolated places) for May 31 and June 1.
The lowest maximum temperature in Punjab was 44.2 degrees Celsius, recorded in Ropar, while it was 43.2 degrees Celsius in Haryana, recorded in Yamunanagar.
On Wednesday morning, the lowest minimum temperature recorded was 24 degrees Celsius in Fatehgarh Sahib and the highest minimum temperature was 28.6 degrees Celsius in Ropar.
In Haryana, the lowest minimum temperature was 25.5 degrees Celsius in Ambala and the highest minimum temperature was 33.3 degrees Celsius in Mahendergarh on Wednesday, as per the heatwave bulletin released by the IMD in Chandigarh.
As per the IMD, a severe heatwave was witnessed in Bathinda, Ludhiana, Halwara and Faridkot. There was an average temperature rise of 1 degree Celsius on Tuesday in Punjab, but the temperature was 6.5 degrees Celsius above normal. There is a rise of 0.1 degrees Celsius in the average minimum temperature on Wednesday, but the temperature is 1.9 degrees Celsius above normal in the state.
In Haryana the average rise was by 1.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, but the temperature was markedly above normal by 6.1 degrees Celsius. A severe heatwave was witnessed in Hisar, Narnaul, Sirsa and Rohtak and a heatwave in Ambala and Karnal. A severe warm night was also observed in Narnaul.
On Wednesday morning, there is an average rise of 1.7 degrees Celsius but the temperature is above normal by 2.8 degrees Celsius.
