Man kills woman with sword in broad daylight on her way to office in Mohali, arrested
Murder caught on CCTV cameras; onlookers look the other way

In a gruesome murder that was caught on CCTV cameras, a 31-year-old woman was hacked to death with a sword in broad daylight by a 35-year-old man – apparently her jilted lover – when she was on her way to work during the busy office hours in Phase-V here on Saturday morning.
Police have identified the deceased as Baljinder Kaur of Fatehpur Jattan village near Morinda town. She had been working at a call centre in Industrial Area Phase VII here for the past around nine years.
Police arrested the accused, Sukchain Singh, who had tried to flee the spot after committing the crime. Three police personnel were also injured while trying to arrest the accused. Police also recovered the murder weapon from him.
According to police investigation, Baljinder Kaur had alighted from an autorickshaw and was walking towards her office when the accused, who was already present there, attacked her at least 12-13 times with a sword, leaving her grievously injured on the busy road. The assault took place in full view of public who did nothing to help her. The victim was taken to the civil hospital where she was declared dead.

According to police, the accused appears to be a jilted lover seeking revenge as she had rejected his marriage proposal.
Baljinder Kaur’s brother Dharampreet Singh said that his sister had boarded a bus from their village on Saturday as usual, but around 9.30 am, he received a call from her manager who informed him about the incident. “We immediately rushed to Mohali and reached the civil hospital, but by that time it was all over. The doctors on duty informed us that she (Baljinder Kaur) is no more,” Dharampreet Singh said.
DSP (city-1) Mohit Aggarwal told The Indian Express that they have arrested the accused (Sukchain Singh), who has been working at a fuel station in Samrala town.
“The accused has known the victim for the past around three years and had proposed her for marriage, but she rejected it. He (Sukchain Singh) had been putting pressure on her for the past few months over the issue,” the DSP added.
The injured police personnel were admitted to hospital. “One of the three injured police personnel, Sarbjeet Singh, suffered a deep cut on his body when the accused attacked the police team with the sword,” DSP Aggarwal said.
Sukchain Singh’s mother Jaswinder Kaur said, “Baljinder Kaur had visited our house twice and my son wanted to marry her. Whatever has happened is bad. Sukchain left home around 5.45 am today (Saturday).”

Sukchain Singh belongs to Khirnia village near Samrala town in Ludhiana district. He has two brothers and four sisters.
A resident of Khirnia village requesting anonymity told The Indian Express that Sukchain Singh was a kabaddi player and around a year ago he left the sport after getting injured. He started working at a fuel station in Samrala around four months ago, but had been away from work since June 1.
Sources in police said that Sukchain Singh wanted to marry Baljinder Kaur and they both had decided to marry in January this year. But later Baljinder Kaur wanted to delay the marriage as she wanted her brother to move to Italy.
“Her (Baljinder Kaur) brother went to Italy around six months ago. She supported him financially. Her mother is bedridden. Baljinder was supporting her family financially,” a police official said.
It also came to light during the investigation that both Baljinder Kaur and Sukchain Singh had serious arguments around a year ago over their marriage issue, but the matter was resolved at the panchayat level. At the time Sukchain Singh promised not to talk to her, but around eight months ago they both resumed contact.
Sukchain Singh’s family members claimed that they knew Baljinder Kaur as she had visited his home twice.
But Baljinder Kaur’s brother (Dharampreet Singh) said that they were not aware of Sukchain Singh or his family.
