PU to digitise all 8,000 theses in A C Joshi Library

The Panjab University (PU) has decided to digitise all theses at the A C Joshi library and make them available on the PU website. The decision is likely to benefit hundreds of research scholars studying in the varsity. The decision was taken after realising the immediate need to reduce overcrowding of students in the main library that houses a total of 7.5 lakh books.

Majority of students who visit the library are research scholars from various departments. They come to read the theses in the library. We also receive requests from a number of scholars from various affiliated colleges to PU across Punjab. The digitisation of theses was necessary to reduce this rush of students to the main library and also to cater to the demands of research scholars, said librarian Professor Raj Kumar.

An amount of Rs 35 lakh has been proposed for the project to digitise a total of 8,000 thesis available in the library in various fields of study. With the implementation of the project,all these will be just a click away on the university website and students will no longer need to come to the library to search for the same.

The digitisation will not only help us save time,but also facilitate research work. This is because at times the thesis which one intended to study was being read by some other student. Due to this a student might have to wait for days to get it. But if it is available online,then many students can read a specific thesis as per his/her requirement, said Neha,PhD scholar from Department of Biochemistry,PU.

Dr Kumar added,We have held four meetings in this regard and after a lot of discussion a consensus was developed. The project will be started soon.
