PU students want to turn the tables on their teachers

Students at the Panjab University are most keen to evaluate their teachers.

Students at the Panjab University are most keen to evaluate their teachers. Putting forth the proposal, the Student’s Council submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor and Dean Student Welfare expressing a wish to evaluate teachers on the basis of their teaching style, attitude and behaviour. A copy of the memorandum was also sent to the Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA).

In the proposed scheme, students would be asked to fill a form (twice in each session) evaluating their satisfaction towards the level of a teacher’s grasp on the subject, their method of teaching in class and various other related parameters like attitude and behaviour towards students.

Student council president Sahil Nanda said they wanted that the suggestion be enforced in the next semester. “The reason for our demand is the growing resentment among students regarding the alienating attitude of teachers. Students complain that sometimes teachers threaten them of withholding internal assessment marks. We feel such an evaluation system would check the misuse of power by teachers in future and would help in developing a harmonious teacher-student relationship.”
