Keeping in view the demands made by the sportspersons of Panjab University for which two students sat on an indefinite hunger strike from Monday,Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti had constituted a committee.

The committee held a meeting today and proposed some recommendations. These were not accepted by the students who continued to sit on strike outside the V-C’s office, claiming that these were empty assurances made by authorities.

The committee recommended that the University would collect data on TA/DA being paid to the sports persons in Guru Nanak Dev University and Punjabi University and would give a 10 per cent hike on the higher of the two. The students had demanded a TA/DA of Rs180-200.

The authorities recommended that the sports kits be purchased through tender by the duly constituted Purchase Committee in which two student representatives are already there.

In addition to it more sports persons of Inter-University level will be co-opted in the purchase procedure for the purchase of sports kits. The students had demanded giving decision making powers to them unlike mere dummies. They had asked for purchase orders to be placed after taking their feedback on the samples and not entirely through tender process which ends up having poor quality of equipment.

Students denounced all further recommendations by the authorities as empty promises which they have been making for months.

The committee recommended that re-soiling of the Ground be taken up by SDO (Horticulture) in a phased manner and as for the water facility, authorities said that the concerned committee was already in the process of providing water facility to the grounds. Water from the swimming pool is already being used for irrigation of grounds.
