The list of nominations for the graduate constituency of the Panjab University senate was declared on Monday. As many as 70 nominations were filed for 15 seats from this constituency. The final list,after the scrutiny of nominations for valid candidature,will be announced on Tuesday.
The list contains names of about 15 senators serving the current term,who have re-applied. Prominent among them are Anu Chatrath,a former mayor of Chandigarh,Ashok Goyal,Jarnail Singh,Naval Kishore,Balbir Chand Josan,Jaswant Singh,Prabhjit Singh and Kailash Nath. About 50 of nominations received are from candidates who were not senate members in the previous term.
Vineet Kumar is the only student amongst the nominees,pursuing law from Panjab University. In the previous term,there were no students in the 91-member senate. Two research scholars of PU,Buta Singh Bairagi and Gurkamalpreet Pal Singh,have also applied from this constituency.
The university needs to address students issues at the policy-making level,which is only possible if there is a student senator, said Vineet.
All registered graduates of PU are eligible to file their nominations in this category. The alumni can contest senate elections five years after they do undergraduate courses and immediately after they pass MA or MPhil.
Elections for the registered graduates constituency will be held on September 23,which is the last day of senate elections this year.
Finance secretary launches CCET website
UT Finance Secretary-cum-Technical Education Secretary,V K Singh launched a new website of Chandigarh College of Engineering & Technology (Government Engineering College under Chandigarh Administration) on Monday. CCET principal Dr M S Gujral said the new website would provide the campus recruiters all the information about the college and students. It would also help the alumni in staying connected and contributing towards the growth of the Institute. Singh congratulated the students of computer science engineering who designed the website.
MCM DAV marks one year of photography club
THE Mass Communication Department of MCM DAV College for Women celebrated the successful completion of the first year of its photography club on Monday. An event to mark the occasion consisted of an introductory lecture on photography,a spot photography contest on the topic ‘colours of youth and a caption-writing contest for the student members.
The students were told about the basic techniques of photography. The lecture was followed by an interactive session of the pre-existing members with the new members where the latter were informed of the various activities and endeavours of the photography club during the first year of its inception.
Principal Dr Puneet Bedi congratulated the club members on this special day. It is vital for students to make use of such extraordinary opportunities to lay the foundation stone for the realisation of their professional goals, she said.
INSO protest over hostel conditions
MEMBERS of Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) held a protest against the pitiful conditions in university hostels on Monday. More than 60 INSO workers raised slogans against the wrongful and late hostel allotment policy and the inappropriate behaviour of canteen and mess contractors. They also complained against necessary facilities not being provided in the hostels and leaking roofs in hostel rooms.
INSO PU president Somvir Singh said,Inhuman conditions are prevailing in hostels. PU authorities are spending crores on new buildings by destroying the architectural heritage of the university but no emphasis is being given to maintaining the old buildings,including hostels.
INSO Chandigarh president Anil Ghanghas said the number of hostels was very less as compared to present strength of students in the university. The campus WiFi was also not working properly in even one hostel.
The party members alleged that material of low quality was used in the construction of hostels. They urged for creation of an investigating committee to look into the matter.
SOPU members take up cause of dental body
MEMBERS of the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) submitted a letter to the Vice-Chancellor of the university on Monday,complaining against some problems faced by the students of Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Science and Hospital.
In a five-point letter,the party demanded that with reference to a previously submitted memorandum,the delayed results of re-evaluation,increased fee for reappearing in examinations,maintenance of department washrooms,bus service from north campus to the departments and beautification of the canteen,should be immediately looked into by the administration. The letter mentioned that the demands had been raised earlier also and if they were not addressed soon,the party would have no option but to protest against the administration.
