In a major boost to research and development,Panjab University (PU) has been assured of the Promotion of Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) grant of Rs 34.8 crore under phase-II of the project,which is expected to commence from Jan 1,2014.
The announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Arun Kumar Grover during the Syndicate meeting on Saturday.
Elaborating on the development,he said,The assurance of the grant was conveyed during a meeting of the PURSE coordinators,convened by the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology,earlier this month. The duration of support will be four years,but the capital expenditure under this grant will be required to be made within the first three years of project implementation.
According to the information received,all the 14 universities selected to receive the PURSE grant have been asked to submit their detailed plans of action by September 30.
The plans will be scrutinized and the final decision of the Department of Science & Technology will be communicated to the respective universities by December 31. The first installment of Rs 10 crore will be released in the financial year commencing from April 1,2014.
The PURSE initiative is taken by Department of Science and Technology,Government of India to initiate value-added proactive measures through the introduction of an R&D Incentive Grant.
In appreciation of the R&D contributions of the performing universities,the PURSE scheme provides substantive research grants to universities based on scientific publications in science citation indexed journals through SCOPUS.
