Prof A D N Vajpayee, former Vice-Chancellor of Awadhesh Pratap Singh University (Rewa) in Madhya Pradesh is the new V-C of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU). He will take charge early next week. Prof Vajpayee will succeed Prof Sunil Gupta, whose term had expired last month and was hoping for a second term.
Governor Urmila Singh, who is also the Chancellor of the university, passed the orders for his appointment this morning reportedly after consultations with Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on four names recommended by the search committee
Prof Vajpayee, who carries vast administrative experience as the former V-C of two Madhya Pradesh universities,is currently a professor of Economics at Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur.
When contacted at Jabalpur,Prof Vajpayee said: I am extremely delighted to have received a fax informing me about my appointment as V-C of HPU. I will set-out my priorities the moment I reach Shimla. The first thing is the culture of the university and place, secondly an overall campus atmosphere and finally academics.
The tenure of Prof Gupta at HPU was mired by controversies. There were a spate of violent incidents in the campus. The teaching community,non-teaching staff and students organisations were opposed to his second term, and had submitted separate memorandums to Governor Urmila Singh asking for his removal, even before Prof Gupta had completed his term
The university has suffered considerable loss to its reputation and has registered a decline in academic standards in the past three years.
Meanwhile, the Governor has ordered another term for Dr K R Dhiman, the outgoing V-C of Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry,Solan.
