A domed resort on the blue expanse of Lake Pichola, with immaculately manicured gardens and Rajasthani architecture, looks like an invitation to time travel to the medieval ages. That, though,is only one of the reasons why Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur has been ranked as the fifth Best Hotel of the World in the world and the first in India in a recent poll by Travel+Leisure magazine.

An annual feature, the Best Hotels of The World poll saw the hotel beat the usual international favourites like Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi,Bangkok, and Triple Creek Ranch in Montana Rockies. This is based on a a readers’ poll held from December 2010 to March 2011. The results also point toward an increasing popularity of hotels and resorts in Africa. Singita Grumeti Reserves in Tanzania topped the list with Singita Sabi Sand at Castleton Camp, and Royal Malewane Kruger, both in South Africa, ranking second and third respectively. Other Indian hotels like Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur,Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, and Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, also got good ratings.
