It seems that the Chandigarh Traffic Police did not learn any lesson from its past mistakes as traffic chaos was once again witnessed in the city during the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), Sector 19, on Wednesday.

Traffic remained stalled at several places. Madhya Marg witnessed long traffic jams while people also faced problems in travelling on other roads as traffic was diverted without prior information.

The President reached CRRID at 5 pm. His motorcade passed from Sector 29 to Sector 26 and then towards Sector 19 on the Madhya Marg. Apart from the Madhya Marg, traffic was choked at Sector 19/7 roundabout and traffic cops found it difficult to regulate the traffic. People had to wait for nearly half an hour to get out of the jam.

Apart from Sector 7, sectors 9, 17 and 26 also witnessed massive traffic jams in the evening. A long traffic jam was witnessed on the road leading towards Sector 8 from Sector 17. An ambulance got stuck in the jam in Sector 19. Police personnel then moved the traffic to make way for it.

“The administration did not learn any lesson from its past mistakes. The city gets choked whenever any VVIP visits. Now it is time to go back home but we are stuck and suffering for no fault of ours,” said Dr Satpal Singh, a city-based doctor who got stuck in the jam in Sector 7.

Some commuters also complained that they had to face problems as the police did not issue the route plan a day before the arrival of the VVIP. Singh said that the police should have informed the people about the roads to take and the roads not to take during the President’s arrival.

When contacted, UT Senior Superintendent of Police Sukchain Singh Gill said that he was not looking after the traffic arrangements on Wednesday. SSP (Security and Traffic) Manish Choudhary could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
