Two days after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) granted sanction to prosecute suspended Superintendent of Police (SP) Desh Raj,the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday filed a chargesheet against him in the court of special CBI Judge Vimal Kumar.
The CBI has charged the IPS officer with corruption charges under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The investigating agency was ready with its chargesheet against the suspended SP but was awaiting prosecution sanction from the MHA.
The case will come up for resumed hearing before the CBI court on August 2. The court will now decide on the issue of framing of charges against Desh Raj. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 13 last.
Much to the embarrassment of the Chandigarh Police, the CBI had nabbed Desh Raj accepting illegal gratification of Rs 1 lakh from his junior police officer at his (Desh Raj) official residence in Sector 23 on October 18 last.
The complainant in the case is Inspector Anokh Singh of Sector 26 Police Station. The complainant had alleged that Desh Raj initially demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from Singh, promising the latter to get him exonerated in the two inquiries pending before Desh Raj.
After a bargain, the deal was struck at Rs 2 lakh. Singh had approached the CBI which laid a trap and caught Desh Raj red-handed while accepting the first instalment of Rs 1 lakh.
Desh Raj,a 2008 IPS officer, joined as ACP,Punjabi Bagh,in New Delhi on September 1,2010. After holding the post for about one month,he joined the UT Police as ASP (Central sub-division) on October 20,2010 as under training IPS officer. On July 25,he was given the posting and rank of Superintendent of Police (city and headquarters).
Though the MHA has granted sanction to prosecute the IPS officer, the Central government is yet to initiate a departmental inquiry against him.
