Polybag ban flouted openly

Despite the fact that the Punjab government has imposed a complete ban on the use of polythene bags from May 1,these bags are being used openly in various markets of Jalandhar city and surrounding areas right under the nose of the local bodies department as well as the district administration.

The shopkeepers in the markets, the vegetable and fruit sellers in the streets have all been using these banned carry bags but nobody is either checking or educating them against their use. Most of the street vendors are uneducated and cannot read newspapers.

“We are not told by anyone that these bags are banned,” said a vegetable vendor. Even in the largest medicine market of the region,Dilkhushan Market, the banned bags were being used by chemists and customers were not objecting to getting medicines in them.

On being asked why banned polybags were being used by them, one of the renowned chemists in Dilkhushan market said that they had got a huge stock of these bags with them and only after exhausting this stock would they start using the permissible ones.

He added quickly that they had got permission from authorities to dispose of their stock. But he didn’t reveal which authority had granted him permission. Same was the scene in the main cloth market – Rainka Bazaar – and the wholesale market – Attari Bazaar.

Though some raids were conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) after this order they were just an eyewash as neither a fine nor a challan were imposed against the culprits.
