For the first time,Yuva Parliament brings contesting candidates & the youth face-to-face
First, the TV campaigns drilled home the dire need to vote, then the media flashed names of the candidates and now,a student group is at it,creating awareness and helping us identify and relate to the candidates from our constituency on a one-on-one basis. Its an exercise to wake up the sleeping youth electorate and convert them to an active, informed voter, professes Preet Arjun Singh,a member of We Volunteer,a students group that is organising the first of its kind Youth Parliament on May 9 at 3:15 pm,and is inviting Pawan Kumar Bansal,Harmohan Dhawan,Satya Pal Jain and Ajay Goyal for the two and a half hour debate and discussion.
With an expected turn over of 800 students, the year is crucial, because if we go by the data the Indian electorate of 2009 will be the youngest since 1952 and we cannot afford to lose out on them, says Abhishek, adding that the Parliament will also act as a platform for youngsters to exchange their views on the contesting candidates and to update themselves about the contestants past track record. While, they agree, that there will be people who will miss out on the venture, its just the start and we wish more organisations would get together for endeavours like this, the team signs off on a hopeful note.
