With hundreds of replicas of furniture designed by Le Corbusier,Pierre Jeanneret and their team having been made,the experts are divided over what can be termed heritage. With a large number of such items present in the city,there is no plan in place on what needs to be done with these.
Recently,a large number of items of heritage value including chairs,tables and racks were recovered by the UT Police. While the Administration has constituted a committee to identify the items of heritage value in different departments,a proposal is yet to be put in place on what is to be done with the items. Dr Pradeep Bhagat,principal of Chandigarh College of Architecture and a member of the committee says that certain items that have been created by the team of architects associated with Corbusier. The furniture was made in a different manner then. A cut-off date needs to be decided as all pieces of furniture cannot be termed heritage. However,even replicas are selling for very high prices in the international auction houses, he said.
