PM assures Capt on Anand Marriage Act

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured that the Centre would soon take necessary steps to introduce the Anand Marriage Act.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured that the Centre would soon take necessary steps to introduce the Anand Marriage Act. He gave this assurance to the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh and senior party leaders from the state who met him in New Delhi on Monday Amarinder said that the Prime Minister was in total agreement with him on the issue of the Anand Marriage Act. He said,the PM also spoke to the Home Minister P Chidambaram and Law Minister Salman Khurshid on the issue.

The PCC president said the Prime Minister was also briefed about the widespread prevalence of cancer in Malwa belt owing to the use of contaminated water in the area. The former chief minister stated that the Prime Minister expressed concern over the issue and assured the delegation about setting up a super-speciality cancer hospital in the region.

The Congress delegation also raised the issue of barbed wire fence on the Indo-Pak border,which is several meters inside the international border. The farmers having their land on the other side of the fence face problems in cultivating the land. The delegation urged the Prime Minister that the fence may be shifted right up to the international border. The PM,Amarinder said,assured that he will look into the matter so that some compensation could be worked out for the affected farmers.

The delegation also urged the Prime Minister to grant a special industrial package to Punjab,particularly the border areas,which have remained least developed due to their remoteness. It also pointed out that Punjab had suffered while special industrial packages were given to Jammu and Kashmir,Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand by the NDA government earlier.

The Congress delegation sought special flood relief package for Punjab. It brought to the notice of the Prime Minister the serious flood situation in the state which has led to widespread devastation. The delegation also raised the toe wall and apprised the Prime Minister about the refusal of the Haryana government to build siphons along the Hansi-Butana canal,which has resulted in blockade of water and an imminent threat of floods.
