PIMS assistant professor’s driver assaulted,2 held

Acting on the call of PIMS Assistant Professor Sandeep Singh,who managed to escape unhurt,a police party rushed to the spot and arrested two assailants — Avtar Singh,posted as clerk in the Punjab DPI office in Chandigarh and his accomplice Manpreet Singh,an agriculturist,Investigating Officer (IO) ASI Bharat Bhushan told Newsline.

The driver,Mukesh Kumar,in his mid-30s,of Sodhi village in Jalandhar,was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Preliminary police investigations suggested it was a case of road rage and the medical examination of both assailants confirmed that they were in an inebriated state,the IO revealed,while adding that a local court ordered to release both the assailants on bail on Saturday. Kumar told the police that he was driving PIMS assistant professor in the official car from Jalandhar to Chandigarh and when they reached near Landran Chowk around 7.30 pm,a Maruti Zen car overtook them and stopped in front,forcing him to stop.

“Two youths came out of the Zen and without any provocation pulled me out of the car and started mercilessly beating me in full public view. Frantic efforts by the professor to avert the incident provided futile,following which he called the police control room,” the driver said. A case has been lodged against the accused.
