Dr Sukhpal Kaur, principal, National Institute of Nursing Education at PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been named one of the 10 finalists for the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, a recognition given to outstanding nurses who have significantly contributed to the field of healthcare.

Competing for a two-crore prize, Dr Sukhpal’s selection shines a spotlight on India’s nursing community on a global platform, underscoring the critical role nurses play in improving patient outcomes and strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.

With over 34 years of service, Dr Sukhpal has shaped the next generation of nurse leaders while pushing the boundaries of nurse-led research in India. She has played a key role in securing nationally funded interdisciplinary research from prestigious national bodies such as ICMR, Department of Science and Technology, and Department of Biology for research focused on some of the most vulnerable populations — the elderly, cancer patients, bedridden individuals, and those in underserved communities. Her work has translated into tangible, life-changing innovations: trilingual educational resources, indigenous cryotherapy techniques for palliative care, home-care models, and mobile apps that are now being used in both hospital and home settings across the country.

She has also been instrumental in the development of nurse-led clinics in amputee rehabilitation and oncology, providing specialised care in resource-limited settings. Even during the COVID-19 crisis, she continued mentoring students and leading clinical research, with multiple published papers and two acclaimed books on nursing research that are now widely used in nursing curricula.

The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, now in its fourth edition, recognises and celebrates nurses for their exceptional service and dedication. The top 10 finalists were selected from over 100,000 registrations from 199 countries, following a meticulous review process managed independently by Ernst & Young LLP (EY), along with an Expert Jury and the Grand Jury. The winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025 will be announced at a gala event in Dubai on May 26, 2025
