With the code of conduct for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections to come to an end on Friday, projects that were pending in the Municipal Corporation are set to see the light of the day. The civic body has also scheduled the meeting of the General House on Friday where a number of agenda items for development work would be discussed.
During the House Meeting last month,no agenda item concerning development work could be taken up due to the code of conduct. Instead a controversy was generated with the officers walking out. The tendering for several projects was also on hold due to the code.
The construction of bridge in Sector 17 is to be undertaken. The estimates for the same have already been approved. Only one tender was received after invitation. Due to this, tenders are required to be invited again. However, this could not be done due to the code of conduct.
The same is the case with the food street that is to be constructed in Sector 48. The construction has been pending for one reason or the other. The foundation stone for the food street was laid in December 2009. After numerous attempts when the contract was finally allotted it was found that the site was close to a proposed slow carriageway. In the delay that ensued in getting approval again the contractor refused to start work. The process of tendering was repeated. The contractor who had been allotted the contract has backed out again.
Work like carpeting of roads and laying paver blocks is also pending in some areas. During the rains it caused inconvenience to the residents as the area turned slushy. The councillors have also lined up various activities that they want undertaken in their wards.
By next month, the code of conduct of the Municipal Corporation elections is likely to come into force.
