Though the Police Control Room (PCR) of Chandigarh Police had received a staggering number of 712 calls last year in which the callers reported incidents of snatching, the total number of cases registered were much less. Only 176 cases were registered in various police stations across the city.
In addition to the 712 calls received by the PCR,there were 56 more calls in which the complainants had caught hold of the accused. But only 176 cases of snatching were registered. Out of these, only 60 cases were solved.
Significantly, the total number of cases registered by the UT Police in 2012 is less than the previous four years.
Explaining the mismatch,UT Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh says,There are times when a person gives a call on the PCR and reports an incident of snatching, but when the PCR team reaches, there is no one on the spot or on the location from which the call is received. There are also cases wherein a person has lost the money or deliberately given it to someone and tells the family members that the money or the article has been snatched. The family members give a call but nothing comes out after investigation.
UT Police statistics show that while the overall law and order situation has become better in the last few years, incidents of snatching, which hits the common man the most, have increased. This year,39 cases of snatching have been registered by the UT Police till March 14. Curiously, the rate at which the cases are worked out is still the same.
Inspector General of Police R P Upadhyaya admits that these petty crimes affect the common man the most. The discrepancy in the total cases registered and total calls received is because the verification of facts may reveal something else. But we are taking such cases seriously and are trying to work them out, he says.
