Paver blocks find few takers

The Municipal Corporation may have approved agenda items worth crores for laying paver blocks in various sectors of the city.

The Municipal Corporation (MC) may have approved agenda items worth crores for laying paver blocks in various sectors of the city, but not all residents seem to be happy.

On Wednesday,a group of residents made a presentation before the officials of the UT Administration in this regard. They also met MC officials to highlight their problems.

The members of the Youth Innovative Society, along with residents of Sector 21,visited the internal roads of several sectors. They found that on all roads, where concrete footpaths had been laid,no space had been left around the trees for proper nourishment of the roots. The freshly planted trees in these sectors were not getting sufficient space to grow due to the concrete surroundings.

A member,Sachin Sharma, said that paver blocks are being laid indiscriminately. “Chandigarh may be known for its green cover, but with the installation of the paver blocks, the green spaces are being replaced by concrete. This needs to be stopped,” he said.

Another concern raised during the presentation was that since a few roads may be widened later, the paver blocks will be removed, causing losses to the exchequer.

A short film on the installation of paver blocks in Sector 38 (W) — made by city-based documentary filmmaker Puneet Sachdeva — has been uploaded on the Internet. “The residents are not willing to get paver blocks installed in the area. They want that green spaces are maintained,” he said.

The members of the Society have also appealed to the residents to check if paver blocks are being installed indiscriminately in their areas and bring it to their notice.
