City-based Chaitanya Hospital has been conferred the prestigious “FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award 2010” in the category — Excellence in Patient Experience in recognition of high quality medical care. The FICCI award was given to Neeraj Kumar,managing director and Dr. Poonam Kumar,director by Dinesh Trivedi,Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare,Government of India and Kamal Haasan,actor and chairman FICCI Entertainment Committee – South,in a ceremony held in New Delhi.

“This award aims at recognising organisations across India that have tried to improve healthcare services to masses and are committed to increased efficiency and improved performance of healthcare sector,” says Kumar,whose hospital is no stranger to awards. “When it comes to small hospitals and their functioning,we are one of the two in country,” he adds. According to Kumar,due to an overload on government hospitals and their lack of infrastructure,patients are often neglected emotionally. “They might be well treated for the disease but we must also remember that the patient is disturbed at a psychological level. It is important for hospital management to sensitise the staff and doctors towards holistic patient care,” says Kumar.

“A patient has every right to know about the diagnosis,treatment and the medicines being administered. He has to be made aware of his rights and this can only happen when we all work for and within the system and take the load off government hospitals,” says Kumar. The award is not an easy one to win. “It includes a four-stage filtering mechanism: scrutinising the information provided by hospitals and states by the official tabulator at first stage; short listing the hospitals based on the facts and figures provided by the participants to the interim jury; at the final level,winner is decided based on the data provided in the questionnaire,support documents justifying the numbers and presentations given by shortlisted organisations and states on their initiatives by the distinguished jury; and simultaneous validation of documents carried out by QCI,” he signs off.
