All the activists of Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) party, who have been on a hunger strike on the campus, were taken to hospital by police on Friday even as the protest entered its fourth day.
Members from SOPU and PUSU are on a hunger strike over their demand for removal of the median and construction of a direct way to UIET campus from gate number 3 of the PU campus. The condition of all those participating in the strike deteriorated today and barring one PUSU activist, all were taken to the hospital. However, new activists have replaced them and the hunger strike continues.
Also, the condition of another SOPU member,Rajwinder Aulakh is stated to be deteriorating. Meanwhile,PU officials failed in all their attempts to pacify the students. Dean Students Welfare (DSW),Prof Naval Kishore urged the students to end their strike but the students were determined to put up the strike stating it would end only after the administration arrives at a decision.
The PU authorities have written to Chandigarh Administration but it seems there has been no response yet. Later in the day,PUSU members gathered outside the PU Vice-Chancellor’s office and raised slogans against him for failing to take any action.
The V-C tried his best to appease the students but they were adamant on continuing until a concrete decision is taken on the issue. This was followed by the V-C extending an invitation to members of both SOPU and PUSU for discussions. But with only SOPU members turning up for the discussions, the students left without having a word with the V-C.
