Over 21,526 cases disposed of during National Lok Adalat 

The National Lok Adalat held at the New District Court Complex in Sector 43, Chandigarh, disposed of more than 21,500 cases in a single day, resulting in settlements amounting to over Rs 358 crore across civil, criminal, labour, consumer and revenue disputes.

Judicial authorities said the initiative helped reduce litigation, save time and money, and promote amicable dispute resolution.The National Lok Adalat in Chandigarh disposed of 21,526 cases in a day, with settlements totalling Rs 358.6 crore.

More than 21,526 cases, including pending cases, pre-litigative matters and traffic challans, involving an amount of Rs 35,86,52,763, were disposed of during the National Lok Adalat, constituted at the New District Court Complex, Sector 43, Chandigarh, on Saturday.

A total of 13 benches, headed by serving Judicial Officers, were constituted at the District Courts, Sector-43, Chandigarh. Various categories of cases, including criminal compoundable cases, cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, bank recovery cases, MACT cases, matrimonial disputes, labour disputes, arbitration matters, other civil cases, municipal matters and traffic challans were taken up and disposed of with the consent of the parties.

The Lok Adalat was held under the National Legal Services Authority and under Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice-cum-Patron-in-Chief, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, and Justice Deepak Sibal, Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, the National Lok Adalat was organised today.

In addition, 240 pre-litigative cases involving an amount of Rs 34,70,858 were disposed of by the Permanent Lok Adalat (Public Utility Services).

Twenty-six labour dispute cases involving Rs 55,000 were disposed of by the Labour Court. Seventy-three (73) cases involving Rs 1,36,90,319 were disposed of by the State and District Consumer Commissions, Chandigarh. Further, 163 cases involving Rs 1,31,44,12,577 were disposed of by DRT-II, Chandigarh, and 328 mutations were disposed of by the Tehsildar (Revenue), Chandigarh.

On the occasion, Justice Deepak Sibal, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana, and Executive Chairman, State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, remarked, “Money doesn’t matter, jewellery doesn’t matter; peace of mind matters the most. End long litigation and start a new journey of life. This saves time, money and reduces mental stress.”

He also lauded the collaborative efforts of judicial officers, advocates and administrative staff, emphasising the vital role of Lok Adalats in promoting alternative dispute resolution.

Based on the interaction of Justice Sibal, seven parties involved in matrimonial cases were reunited, whose matters were listed before the Bench of Punnet Mohan Sharma, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Chandigarh.

In one civil dispute involving Rs 3.52 crore, pending for the last three years before the District Courts at Chandigarh and Panchkula, the matter was amicably settled for Rs 3.20 crore due to the efforts of Dr Prikshit, Civil Judge (Junior Division), Chandigarh. Further, a cheque bounce case pending since 2019 involving Rs 53 lakh was settled before the court of Mohit Singh Dabad, Civil Judge (Jr Division), Chandigarh during the National Lok Adalat. The general manager of District Cooperative Milk Producers union Limited (VERKA) was present in court and received the cheque of the settled amount.
