The stunning actress main aim is to be a powerhouse performer
There are few who garner mass adulation after just one film and Mahie Gill, the Chandigarh girl who starred in the runaway success Dev.D is one of them. I am happy for the recognition but I struggled for three years before that, she smiles. At Masala Mantar, her favourite restaurant in the city, today she is all smiles. After this interview, she will be signing her biggest film till date. The movie is called Surmai Shaam and I am cast opposite Naseerudin Shah and Kay Kay Menon two of my favourite actors, she hollers.
Kohled eyes, soft curls kissing her cheeks, the dusky Gill is definitely a looker. Dressed in a little black mini, shes a far cry from Paro in Dev.D. But I am exactly like Paro, she insists. I am temperamental,short-tempered,speak my mind and, like Paro,I too have moved on in life. Only I havent had sex in the fields, she laughs, just as she orders a sugarcane juice and some nimboo chicken. I am very desi and a hardcore non-vegetarian,but these days I have to watch my weight. These are the difficulties of being an actress, she winks. She lets us on some more trivia: I was never given a name. My parents and relatives called me Rimpy when I was born. It was only a few years ago, that my best friend christened me Mahie.
Attention doesnt bother her. I still have a long way to go. I cant get complacent, she says, adding,Money is not the most important thing, but then I need it to sustain here. I have to maintain an apartment in Lokhandwala and next month I am buying a Ford Endeavor, she says. But it is hard to believe that the gorgeous actress isnt dating anybody. There are a lot of proposals, but I havent finalised anyone, she laughs. I will soon. After all,the city makes you lonely.
Gill first came to Mumbai three years ago with a suitcase full of clothes and memories of a failed marriage. I was 17 when I got married. My parents were against it but I wouldnt listen, she says. Once in Mumbai, she attended every party in town with the hope of getting noticed. I was horrible at auditions and photo shoots. A director spotting me at a party was my only hope. Eventually it was at one of my friends sons birthday party that Anurag Kashyap noticed me, she says, adding,I can do anything for Anurag. When he called me one evening to ask if I would work in Gulaal,I was preparing for a holiday. But I gave up the plan instantly and rushed to the studio, she says as her manager interrupts to tell her that the makers of Surmai Shaam will be here any time.
