Now,even apples to put a greater strain on wallet

Apples are likely to be pricier this year due to a shortage in yield. Only two varieties of apples,Royal and Richard,have reached markets till now.

Apples are likely to be pricier this year due to a shortage in yield. Only two varieties of apples,Royal and Richard,have reached markets till now.

While the wholesale price for Royal is Rs 1200 for 25 kgs,the Richard variety is available at Rs 450 for 25 kgs. These varieties are available in the market at Rs 130 and Rs 70 per kg respectively.

Last season,the wholesale prices for Royal and Richard were Rs 750 and Rs 550 per 25 kgs respectively. The market rates for the two varieties were Rs 80 and Rs 50 per kg.

Subhash Chandra Randhawa,President of sector 26 Market Association said,“The cultivation of apples this year is nearly 40% lesser than that in the last couple of years. On top of that,a large portion of the production is consumed in Himachal itself. Due to this shortage in supply,the prices for apples are going to be higher in this season.”

Other varieties of apple including Missri,Red Gold and Naak will be available in the market within the next few days. Missri is the cheapest of all these varieties. This year,it will be available at Rs 150 per five kgs,while it will be priced at Rs 40 per kg in the market.

The last mango varieties of this season,Chausa and Dusshehri,have arrived. The wholesale price for the two varieties is Rs 450 and Rs 250 per 13 kgs,respectively.

However,the per kg price for these two varieties of mangoes is relatively higher in the market with Chausa being available at Rs 50 per kg and Dusshehri at Rs 30 per kg.
