After Fazilka,it is now the turn of Abohar residents to demand district status. A meeting was held in this connection on Sunday where representatives from all parties reached at a consensus that Abohar should be declared a district. On the other hand, residents of Fazilka have been already sitting on a chain hunger strike for the last more than 40 days, pressing for a similar demand.
In Abohar, the meeting was chaired by former BJP president Fakir Chand Shukla while Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar and leaders from SAD were also present on the occasion. Jakhar said the residents of Abohar had to travel 150 to 200 kilometres to reach Ferozepur, the district headquarter,to get their work done and this led to loss of time and money. At times, people can return home only after three days if they have to go for a court hearing, he said.
Jakhar claimed that the demand for a district status for Abohar had been accepted during former chief minister Beant Singhs regime, but it could not be implemented. Sanjeev Saluja, general secretary of Abohar SAD,said the government should give a serious thought to the demand. Fazilka, too,is also demanding a district status with a similar reasoning that much time is wasted for routine work.
