No Child’s Play

While a purple and yellow spider is an object of focus in a photograph,the beautiful Sukhna Lake is the subject of another. Then there is another with a snapshot of Burj Dubai — the tallest building in the world. It’s a play of contrasts — simplicity and opulence — that marks the 7th Annual Photography Exhibition of St John’s High School’s Photography Club. Displayed by a group of 20 students between the age of 12 and 18,“the exhibition has put together a year’s hard work,” says the students’ teacher,Michaelangelo Francis,as he takes us around the frames that bring individualistic perspective to the play.

If for Ranbir Singh and Sabad Sarin,it is all about bees,butterflies and flowers,Tejas Oberoi has concentrated on photographing students during everyday life. “There was no particular theme and we were free to click what we liked,so all of us have clicked what our heart desired,” says Shikhar Sarin,who also shows us one of his photographs,wherein the Indian flag has been clicked with a hazy ripple effect.

Also sharing space here are landscape shots from across the globe,of places students visited during their vacations — from Greece and England to Peru and Rome. While most of them zoom in on the famous structures ,Shray Mehta’s representation of sand dunes in Jaisalmer has left many admiring,as have Ankit and Anmol Malhotra’s pictures of London Eye and Dubai malls respectively. Also,worth seeing are works of Ishrat Cheema,who has displayed a snap shot of a chess board,where the king and a pawn are captured while being moved.

Squirrels too have become the muse of many here. Though most of the works are amateurish in technique,at this exhibition the subjects,it seems,have been well researched and the lightning has been given special attention.
