NIT Hamirpur student expelled for threatening female student over video call

A first-year B Tech student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, has been booked for threatening and using foul language during a video call with a female student from the same institute. The accused student has since been expelled from the institute for his actions.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday night, sparked an unrest at the institute, with many students rallying in support of the woman and demanding action against the accused, a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Sources revealed that both the victim and the accused reside in the institute’s hostels.

According to a source, “The woman was in her hostel room when she received a video call from the man. He threatened her and used foul language, causing her to break down. Her friends came to her aid, and she informed them about the call. Following this, the female students reported the matter to the authorities and began protesting.” The police were later called to the scene.

Bhagat Singh Thakur, Superintendent of Police, Hamirpur, said, “The victim lodged a complaint, based on which an FIR was filed. She reported that the suspect had been stalking her on social media for a long time, but she tried to ignore him.”

Meanwhile, Archana Santosh Nanoty, Registrar of NIT Hamirpur, assured the students that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in illegal activities.
