NIRF 2024 : Panjab University slips to 60th position in the overall category

In the category of universities, the Panjab University stood at 38th place. It had clinched 25th rank in in this category last year.

The Panjab University slipped to 60th position in the overall category of the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2024 released by the Union Ministry of Education Monday. Last year, PU had ranked 44th in this category.

In the category of universities, the Panjab University stood at 38th place. It had clinched 25th rank in in this category last year.

PU stood fifth among the state universities. The rankings were released by Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan.
In the “overall” category, PU got a score of 52.99 while Chandigarh University in Mohali, which stood at 32nd rank in this category, got a score of 58.30.

In the category of universities, the Panjab University got a score of 55.11 nationally and rather had Chandigarh University in Mohali standing notches above it in the same category, i.e. at 20th rank. Even Lovely Professional University in Patiala (Punjab) has got 27th rank with a score of 56.92 nationally in the said category.

A core committee has developed the methodology for ranking institutes, identifying broad parameters for evaluating various universities and institutions. The criteria for the ranking include teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. Each category has separate score in which each university is then assessed and accordingly ranked.

In the category of teaching, learning and resources, PU got 54.31 score out of 100, in research it got 42.01 score, in the graduation outcome, it got 74.07, a score of 63.38 in the outreach and inclusivity and 50.68 in the perception.

In the detailed report, as far as number of PhD students that have graduated in 2022-23 from Panjab University were 496 as compared to 645 of them that graduated in 2021-2022. These were full-time PhD students.

In the category of state public universities, Panjab University ranked fifth with a score of 67.43.

The PU authorities said that the university “has improved its overall score among universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF Rankings 2024 ) announced today by Ministry of Education”.

PU officials maintained that the PU has maintained its rank in the bracket of 11-50 on innovation parameters, same as in 2023.

In the PU, the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) has improved its rank to seventh among all pharmaceutical institutions, improvement in its rank of eighth in the year 2023.

Dental Institute of PU too has been ranked 27th, a marked improvement from 34th rank last year.

Colleges category

The Government Home Science College got 51st position. It got a score of 55.92 nationally. The SD College was ranked 70th with a score of 54.50. Only these two colleges figured in the top 100 category of the NIRF rankings.
