The residents of the southern sectors of the city can expect some respite from power cuts in this summer after the UT Finance Secretary V K Singh on Friday inaugurated the commissioning of a 30 MVA Power Transformer in Sector 52.
As per the officials of the Engineering Department, this will substantially reduce the the over loading at 66 KV Grid Substation Sector 52,UT,Chandigarh and 33 KV Grid S/Stn. Sector 34 will also be reduced thereby further providing better electricity supply to the southern sectors such as Sector – 43,44,51,52,53,61 etc.
This is the first transformer of such a high rating (30 MVA) installed in UT Chandigarh,as earlier there was a Power Transformer of 10 MVA and 20 MVA ratings. At present, the total installed transformation capacity of 66KV,Sector 52,Grid Sub Station is 77.5 MVA.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the last summer season, overloading of the existing power transformers at 66KV Grid Sub Station Sector 52 was observed to be more than 95% and rational power cuts had to be imposed to save the power transformers from damage.
To avoid overloading at the above substation, work was allotted in May 2010 to NTPC Electric Supply undertaking for providing 1×30 MVA.
