Museum at Godse trial site in Shimla

The site of the Nathuram Godse trial in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case will now be used by Himachal Pradesh to attract tourists.

The site of the Nathuram Godse trial in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case will now be used by Himachal Pradesh to attract tourists.

A museum is planned at Peterhoff, currently housing a Himachal Pardesh Tourism Development hotel,to recreate the Godse trial that was held here in 1948-49. During that time, the Punjab and Haryana High Court of united Punjab (which included parts of Himachal Pradesh) was located at Peterhoff in Shimla.

“The museum will be accommodated in the present structure after it undergoes renovation. The HPTDC publicity wing is also working to bring out a brief literature on the trial that will be displayed here for tourists,” said Vijay Sharma, manager of the HPTDC’s Hotel Peterhoff.

A team will also oversee the prospects of the collection of artifacts related to the trial and Godse’s visits to Shimla from Ambala jail, where he was lodged.

After creation of the Himachal state in 1971,the High Court at Peterhoff made way for the Himachal Raj Bhawan.

The original Peterhoff building that was witness to the trial was burnt in 1991 after which the new structure was constructed as HPTDC property and resumed operations in 1998.
