The young man found murdered near Gursagar Gurdwara on Wednesday morning has been identified as Akash,a resident of Hoshiarpur. Akash was allegedly an auto thief who was facing numerous theft cases in various courts of Chandigarh and parts of Punjab.

The Chandigarh Police had arrested Akash about two years ago on charges of stealing vehicles from various parts of the city and had recovered a few stolen vehicles from his possession. During preliminary investigation after the recovery of his body, the police discovered that Akash was the same person who was arrested by the Punjab Police in Mataur on charges of vehicle theft.

Akash had been staying in Mohali for the last several months. According to investigating officials,he was working in a call-centre in Mohali but was still part of a racket active in vehicle thefts.

Akash had got his name tattooed on his right forearm, which provided a vital clue to the police in his identification. While the motive behind his murder is yet to be ascertained, the investigating officers said it could be a result of an old enmity.
