As Mohali steps into 2026, the city is gearing up for a transformative phase marked by major infrastructure upgrades, green initiatives and long-awaited civic projects. From sustainable wastewater management to new roads, transport links and healthcare facilities, the coming year promises to redefine Mohali’s urban landscape.

Modern STP, ZLD plant planned for Sector 101, IT City

In a significant push towards sustainable urban development and environmental protection, plans have been initiated to set up a capacity-based sewage treatment plant (STP) and a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) for Sector 101, IT City and adjoining areas. Design drawings and consultancy services for the project have already been proposed.

The proposed facilities will deploy advanced treatment technologies, including tertiary treatment, ultra-filtration and a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system, aimed at ensuring maximum reuse of treated water and zero discharge of liquid waste into the environment.

Officials said the STP and CETP would comply with the latest norms prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB). “Modern treatment processes will allow wastewater to be treated to high quality, enabling reuse and significantly reducing dependence on freshwater sources,” an official said.

With rapid residential and commercial expansion in Sector 101 and IT City, the generation of sewage and industrial effluents has been rising steadily. “In this scenario, the project is crucial for ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection in the area,” the official added.

The ZLD system will ensure that no treated wastewater is released outside the plant, helping curb pollution. The project is expected to protect groundwater and surface water sources and reduce contamination of nearby drains and natural water bodies. Treated water will be reused for horticulture, flushing and industrial purposes, leading to substantial water conservation.

Confirming the development, GMADA executive engineer Himanshu Sandhu said, “Work towards setting up new STPs has already begun in the new year. A tender has been floated to engage consultancy services for design drawings of the plant. Once the tender process is completed, construction work will commence.”
