Mohali admin issues flood alert as Ghaggar crosses 70,000 cusecs
The Mohali administration has asked the villagers in the Dera Bassi subdivision to remain vigilant and avoid crossing swollen causeways.

The SAS Nagar administration issued a flood warning Friday morning after water discharge in the Ghaggar crossed 70,000 cusecs at 8 am, advising residents of nine villages in the Dera Bassi subdivision, located on the embankments, to stay alert and be ready to move to safer ground if required.
The tentative list, flagged by the district administration, includes Tiwana, Khajoor Mandi, Sadhanpur, Sarsini, Alamgir, Dangdhera, Mubarikpur, Mirpur, and Bakarpur. The advisory linked the spike to heavy rain in the catchment and the opening of Sukhna Lake gates.
The administration urged people to avoid riverbanks, move livestock to higher ground, and follow updates from control rooms. Villagers have been advised to keep essential documents and medicines readily available and to assist the elderly and children during any evacuation.
The district administration said it will issue further instructions if the situation escalates. Residents have been asked to rely on official channels for updates and not to attempt crossings at inundated causeways.
Verified helplines shared by the district include the DC office control room at 0172-2219506, mobile at 76580-51209, and Dera Bassi at 01762-28322.
The Chandigarh administration has opened Sukhna’s floodgates multiple times this monsoon to release excess water into the Ghaggar via the Sukhna choe.
Local choke points such as the Mubarikpur causeway — where overflows have already forced repeated closures this season — remain vulnerable, prompting traffic diversions in recent weeks. Residents living along the low-lying river edge near the causeway have previously reported water entering homes during sudden rises.
Officials said that the embankment strengthening undertaken near Tiwana after last year’s damage has held during recent high flows, although erosion-prone stretches continue to be closely monitored. The water resources department reported stone revetments and studs installed on priority along this reach earlier this monsoon.
Dera Bassi tehsil includes several of the named villages along the Ghaggar’s course, underscoring the area’s exposure when catchment rain coincides with regulated releases from Sukhna.
