The Balram Luthra bribery case is proving to be a major cause of embarrassment for the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, specially its Moga division. After it came to light that drug inspector Luthra, who was caught taking bribe, was falsely implicated,Superintendent of Police (Vigilance),Ferozepur Range,Sajjan Singh Cheema has been transferred to Chandigarh.
Senior Superintendent of Police (I) Rajninder Singh, who is investigating the matter, said: Cheema has been asked to join Chandigarh. As head of the region,he either knew what was happening and thus a partner to all this,or he did not know about the operation at all, which also makes him liable for action.DSP Vigilance Amarjit Singh Matwani, who claimed to have caught Luthra accepting Rs 5,000 as bribe, has already been placed under suspension on charges of administrative lapses in handling the case, particularly for not following the rules and regulations. Besides,an FIR was registered under relevant Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act,1989,against Jarnail Singh,an ASI,along with seven others in connection with the case. Asked about the role of Matwani in the case,Singh said: We have to arrest the ASI,after which we will know everything. These people are absconding, but will be caught soon.
