Jyothsna Chakravarthy on walking for Chanel, being one of India’s leading models, and how an MBA degree is her safety net.

When Jyothsna Chakravarthy walked down the ramp at the Grand Palais in France as part of Chanel’s Paris-Bombay show earlier this month, she was more than a little nervous. “It had just dawned upon me that this show was a big step in my career. After all,one doesn’t get to walk for a Chanel show every other day,” she says.

It all happened very fast. That did not allow much

time for the news of being selected by Chanel to sink in. “Chanel’s Paris office got in touch with my agency after they saw me on the cover of an Indian fashion magazine. Thereafter,I sent across my portfolio to Chanel and the next thing I knew I was on a plane to Paris for the show,” says Chakravarthy.

The biggest surprise in Paris came in the form of

Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel. “I never thought I would be walking for Karl Lagerfeld, but he had no starry airs, and that made it easy,” she reveals.

When in Paris, she made it a point to approach casting agencies. While it’s still too early, she is looking forward to a favourable response from them. “If things work out,I’d love to even move base to Paris,” notes the 24-year-old. Not many would dispute the fact that this Bangalore girl’s journey to Paris,in the course of a three-year modelling stint, makes for an interesting story. With a professor father and a banker mother, this telecom engineer-turned-model came from a non-glamorous Tamil Brahmin background.

She recalls how her modelling career started off with Anila Anand — a leading model co-ordinator in Bangalore — introducing her to the fashion world when she was still in her third year of engineering. “Through her,I shot for an Italian magazine, which was followed by shows for a leading apparel brand in Bangalore. Then came Lakme Fashion Week where I was spotted by Anaita Shroff Adajania. This was followed by a cover with a leading fashion magazine and the Garnier shampoo ad,” reminisces Chakravarthy.

She is also quick to shake off the stereotyped image of a partygoer model. Most of her friends are from outside the modelling industry and she claims to prefer curling up with a book. “It is one of the reasons why I moved back to Bangalore after seven months in Mumbai,” she points out.

But she has no illusions about the glamour world either. “I maybe eyeing bigger modelling assignments and even Bollywood projects but I am also looking at an MBA degree as my safety net. I am aware of the transitory nature of fame,” she says.
