A minor fire at the 11 KV sub-station at Nehru Hospital PGI this morning created a lot of confusion and affected the power supply in the hospital partially.

At around 10 am,people complained of excessive smoke coming from a corner of the hospital. Hospital authorities said sparks were noticed at the power station which led to a cable catching fire. Officials said there was no major damage.

According to sources, the PGI fire control room was informed but it failed to respond on time. The UT Fire department was then called.

Sources said it took the firemen some time to begin operation as the power supply of the entire hospital had to be stopped.

“The situation was brought under control within half an hour. No damage has been reported at the hospital,” said spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar.

“Around 10 am,I was near the corridor going to the lecture theatre, when saw the area covered in smoke. Every one thought there was a major fire in the hospital and we came out to the lawns. After some fifteen minutes,we were assured the situation was under control,” said Ram Chander, who had come with a patient.

PGI has been experiencing power problems for some time now. On various occasion, keys areas in the hospital have gone without power, especially at night, due to wear and tear of old wires.
